Biography
Catalina Ponor was born on August 20, 1987. At this
time it wasn't known what great things this young Romanian would do in
gymnastics. Catalina hails from Constanta, Romania the hometown of
another Romanian star, Simona Amanar. Catalina has already achieved
great success in gymnastics with her three silver medals in Anaheim at
the World Championships in 2003. She placed 2nd in the team event and on
floor and balance beam, her favorite events. Catalina has also won 3
gold medals at the European Championships in 2004 with the team and one
beam and floor. Catalina now lives in Deva, Romania where she trains as
part of the senior National team. Her roommate in Deva is Oana Ban.
Catalina started to dream of her own success in gymnastics when she saw
Simona Amanar and Maria Olaru on television. The road to success has
been a hard one, but Catalina says it has been worth it. Catalina is a
self described as hard-working and strong and is friends with everyone
in Deva. She has been on the National team since 2002. Catalina admires
her coaches Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang. While she is happy with
her results thus far she is yearning for Olympic gold. Expect to see her
in Athens competing for gold. She is a formidable force in the
gymnastics world and one to be reckoned with.
